The Crypto Fear & Greed Index: What It Measures and How to Use It
The Crypto Fear & Greed Index is a daily sentiment score from 0 (extreme fear) to 100 (extreme greed). It condenses several market inputs — volatility, momentum and volume, social-media activity, surveys, Bitcoin dominance and search trends — into a single number that answers one question: is the crowd emotional right now?
What the zones mean
Readings below 25 are labeled extreme fear: investors are dumping or refusing to buy, often after sharp drawdowns. Readings above 75 are extreme greed: FOMO is in control and late buyers are chasing. The middle band is where trends quietly develop.
The contrarian playbook
The index became famous because of a simple observation: extremes tend to mark turning points. "Be fearful when others are greedy" is the cliché, and the data behind it is real — but an extreme reading can persist for weeks in a strong trend. The index tells you the crowd's temperature, not when it will break.
A disciplined use: when fear is extreme, start watching for reversal confirmation instead of panic-selling into the hole. When greed is extreme, tighten risk instead of adding leverage.
